CHARLEY CALFEE TAKEN BY DEATH
Widely Known Bluefield Merchant Died Yesterday Afternoon Following Long Illness; Funeral On Thursday
Charley Calfee, 46, widely known Bluefield merchant, died at 1:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at St. Luke's Hospital. Death was attributed to hemorrhage of the brain. Mr. Calfee had been in declining health for the past year, although he had continued active in business up until the time of his death. He was admitted to the hospital several days ago. A native of this city, Mr. Calfee, a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Calfee, 2310 Walton Avenue, had spent his entire life in Bluefield. After completing the public schools of Bluefield, he worked for several retail firms of this city, and for the past twenty-three years had been engaged in business for himself. For a number of years, he had operated the City Meat Market on Bland Street. Shortly before he launched his business career, he married Miss Maxine Ryder of McDowell County. For sometime, the family has lived on Bailey Avenue. He was a member of the First Christian Church. Besides his aged parents and widow, he is survived by six children - Thelma, Nellie, Charles Jr., Annie Belle, Billie and Mary Emma. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. W.G. Meadows of Hardy, VA., Mrs. W.F. Perkins of Bluefield and one brother, James of Eckman. Complete funeral arrangements had not been made yesterday, but is was announced that burial would be in Woodlawn Cemetery Thursday.
