~ CIVIL WAR VETERAN ~
James D. Havens was born in New York, June 6, 1826, and passed away on May 12, 1910, at Cherokee, Iowa. He was a Civil War Veteran serving as a private in Co. B. 8th Regiment Veteran Reserve Corps, and honorably discharged at Chicago July 5, 1865.

He married Mary E. Streeter on June 10, 1849. She passed away Oct. 12, 1895. She was born July 6, 1833. They had 5 children, with two surviving: J. M. Havens of Sioux City, Iowa; and Mrs. Charles Hitchcock of Sheridan, Wyoming.

Mr. Havens married again on Oct. 15, 1897, to Lenora Penfield. He was a resident of this vicinity about 42 years.

The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. with the service being conducted by Rev. C. G. Butler.
He was buried in the Ida Grove Cemetery, Ida County, Iowa,
beside his first wife.

HE WAS SON OF JAMES DEBBS AND ELIZABETH BENNETT HAVENS.

July 4, 1873, James Havens returned from a trip to Grant County, Wisconsin, bringing back with him 13 new settlers for Ida County, Iowa. They were Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Ostrander, wife and family, and Austin Fisher.
