He was the son of Isaac Jones and Ann(Hilderbrant) Broughton. He was married to Pathenia Emmaliza Smith after the Civil War. They had 9 children: V., Z., John WIlliam, Dora, Pearl, twins named Walter and Ida, Bertie,and Oscar.He was listed on Masonic records: Sabine Lodge,La March 12, 1881 and Palestine Lodge 31,Texas May 14, 1907

Mr. W. D. Broughton, aged sixty-six years, died at his home three miles south of the city this morning at 11 o'clock. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the family home under the auspices of Palestine Chapter No. 31, A. F. & A. M. Interment will be made in the Pleasant Springs cemetery.
Mr. Broughton was one of the best known citizens of the county, and had a host of friends, who will be grieved to learn of his death.
Friends of the family are requested to attend the funeral. The Herald is requested to announce that Palestine Lodge No. 31, A. F. & A. M., will meet at 1 p.m. tomorrow to attend the funeral of Mr. Broughton. [Palestine Daily Herald, Palestine, Texas, October 28, 1907
