ARMSTEAD, A. H. [Albert Hamilton]

Appeal Democrat - 9/24/1927, p1 - Funeral for A. H. Armstead 2 p.m. Sunday - Funeral services for the late A. H. Armstead, mayor of Wheatland for many years, who was killed in an automobile accident at Wheatland Thursday evening, will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Odd Fellows Hall in Wheatland. The body will be interred in the Wheatland cemetery by Lipp & Sullivan. - The inquest held at Sheridan yesterday afternoon resulted in a verdict of accidental death. Coroner Colin B. Hislop of Auburn, Placer county, officiated. - Dr. F. C. Jackson of Yuba City, whose car struck the truck on which Armstead and Roy Cass had just backed out of the Armstead orchard onto the highway told of the circumstances. He was traveling south on the highway at a speed of 38 miles an hour when he saw the truck back out from a clump of trees in front of him. He sounded his horn and jammed on all his brakes. - The crash sent Armstead through the windshield of his truck and broke his neck. The Jackson car was shunted through a fence and up against the embankment of the Southern Pacific railroad. - F. L. Mason of San Francisco driving behind the Jackson car, verified the speed. - Measurements taken at the scene showed that the Jackson car had slid along on locked wheels for 110 feet, starting when nearly in the middle of the highway and angling off to the left side as it approached the truck, being on the left side when it struck. - With Dr. Jackson were Mrs. Jackson and W. D. Butler. They received slight injuries.
