Robert was in the US Marines Reserves when he went into extended active duty 27 May 1966, at Quantico, Virginia.
Arriving in Vietnam 19 January 1968, Robert was assigned to HML-167, MAG-16, 1st Marine Air Wing. Robert was the pilot of a UH-1E #154962 that was flying on a reconnaissance mission when the helicopter was shot down by hostile forces, near Nui Da (Hill 65) and 20 kilometers south southwest of Danang City. The helicopter crashed and burned. There were no survivors. Bodies were recovered.
1st Lurie served his country for 2 years.
