While serving a 30-year prison sentence in Utah for murder, he began a correspondence with author Norman Mailer, who helped him publish his best-selling book about prison life, "In The Belly of The Beast" (1981). Mailer and other celebrities supported his parole, which was granted in June 1981. Abbott moved to New York City and briefly became popular on the literary circuit. Six weeks after his he murdered a waiter and in January 1982 he was sent back to prison for life. He wrote another book, "My Return" (1987), which was not a success, and never expressed remorse for his crimes. Abbott committed suicide at the Wende State Correctional Facility in Aden, New York.
