Private First Class Dennis Harold Haynes was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, PFC Haynes served our country until January 11th, 1969 in Dinh Tuong, South Vietnam. He was 20 years old and was not married. It was reported that Dennis died from burns. His body was recovered. Dennis was born on October 10th, 1948 in Wilson, North Carolina. PFC Haynes is on panel 35W, line 070 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for less than a year.
Dennis Haynes was one of 7 young men killed when their ambush patrol was attacked by a large Viet Cong force at about 1:00 in the morning on January 11, 1969. The patrol was in a night position around a Vietnamese farmhouse a few hundred yards from our artillery base where the rest of us were guarding the perimeter. Around 1:00 in the morning, VC attacked the patrol with mortars, rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons. Seven died, two survived by playing dead. -Clyde Freeman

The Reverend R.H.Jackson will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Military Rites will be accorded at graveside. Surviving are his parents, Mr and Mrs J.V.Haynes of Route 2, a sister, Miss Lillie Haynes of the home; and a brother, J.V. Haynes III, also of the home; maternal grandparents, Mr and Mrs Wade Pittman of Route 1, Sims. A graduate of Rock Ridge High School, Haynes entered the Army last June and was sent overseas during November.
