Fred William Cobb died Saturday evening, Jan. 13, 2007, in St. James Healthcare. He was born in Butte on Feb. 3, 1927, to Fred and Martha (Gibson) Cobb and attended Butte Schools. Fred enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 and served on the destroyer, USS Gregory. He served in the Navy from 1944 until 1946, when he returned to Butte. On Aug. 16, 1947, he and Ruth "Gussie" Gustafson were married in Butte and she preceded him in death on March 23, 1990.

Fred worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 46 years and served as Chief at the Race Track Volunteer Fire Department. He belonged to and was Past Commander of V.F.W. Post No. 3831 in Pony, belonged to the Order of Cooties, Pup Tent No. 24 in Pony, the American Legion, Silver Bow Post No. 1 in Butte, and the United Veterans Council in Butte. He enjoyed fishing, ice fishing, camping, snowmobiling and four wheeling, but most of all was a loving father. He was the family care giver, tending to several family members during times of illness.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Jim Lawrence of Butte, Mary Joe and Rick Wells of Havre; grandchildren, Jay and Micky Lawrence and their sons Tyler and Tanner and Jory Lawrence all of Butte, and Ted Wells and Hanna Wells of Havre; sisters, Ruth McCutchen of Livingston and Mary Jane Cloyd of Missouri. Also surviving are his dear friend Danette Mulcahy and several nieces and nephews, including Bob Chamberlin.

Cremation has taken place in Butte. His family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock in Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home. Memorial services will follow at 2 p.m. Entombment of ashes will be in Mountain View Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Legion.
