Hiram Shippey died Monday morning about 9:30 o'clock at the home of his son, A. E. Shippey in this city. The deceased was born in Norwich, New York, April 17, 1826. He was a veteran of two wars, having served in the Mexican war and being wounded in the city of Mexico at the time that city surrendered to the United States troops. He also served through the last years of the Civil War, being a member of Company D of the Eighth New York Cavalry. Mr. Shippey was married in New York and came west with his wife and young children in 1868, coming direct to Douglas county and taking a homestead on the west bank of Union Lake in Hudson. In 1872 he left the farm and moved to Alexandria where he entered business, for years being proprietor of the old "Douglas House." He left Alexandria in 1884 and went to North Dakota where he took up land. Later he was an inmate of the National soldiers' home at Leavenworth, Kansas.
During Mr. Shippey's residence in Douglas county he was one of the county's best known residents. He was deputy sheriff for a time during the early days and held other minor offices. The wife of the deceased died during the fall of 1881, while a resident of Alexandria. The deceased returned to Alexandria October 6, last, to spend his remaining days with his son. For nearly a month he has been confined to his bed. His end, however, was sudden but peaceful. Death was the result of old age.
Mr. Shippey leaves four children. They are Mrs. Thos. Brown of St. Anthony Idaho; George Shippey of Hawley, Minn.; A. E. Shippey of this city, and Mrs. Frank Grimes of Melford, Utah.
The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the son's home, Rev. Geo. E. Tindall officiating. The interment was in Kinkead cemetery. The pallbearers were L. Kellogg, G. J. Strang, John Sheldon, A. Hubbell, J. A. McKay, F. E. Franklin
