J.B. Mann was the son of Stephen Terry Mann and Mary Ann "Polly" Bibb. His father brought the family from Louisa county, Virginia, to western Kentucky, settling in the Cypress Creek area of Muhlenberg county by 1840. J.B. married Sarah there on 1 May 1848. They moved back and forth between Muhlenberg county and the southern Illinois county of Marion. J.B. and Sarah lost two children in the 1850s: William Browning Mann (22 Feb 1849-20 Dec 1850) and Mary Mildred Mann (19 Feb 1853-16 Jun 1855). The 1870 census finds them in Tebo Twp, Henry county, Missouri, where some of his Ingram in-laws had previously settled. After Sarah's death, J.B. moved back to Marion county, Illinois, where he married Rebecca Jane Wilhoyt Oden on 19 Mar 1871. (She was the widow of Thomas Metcalfe Oden and had two daughters with him--Lela Eddith and Josie Lee.) From an account J.B.'s son John gave to the Dallas Morning News in 1931, his father could not decide whether he liked Illinois or Missouri best, so he broke the deadlock by setting out by covered wagon for Texas in 1876. J.B. rented a farm near Lancaster for about a year before moving to the Hutto area of Williamson county. By 1900 he had moved north to Hardeman county and was farming south of Goodlett. (He deeded part of his land for what is now Goodlett Cemetery.) His final journey was to homestead in what is now Custer county, Oklahoma. He died at his home in the west part of Weatherford.
His obituary appeared in the Custer County Republican on 14 Jan 1904, noting he "took a bad cold about two weeks ago which developed in a case of pneumonia that his aged constitution could not resist. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and a man respected and loved by all who knew him. He leaves a sorrowing wife and eight children to mourn his death."
J.B. died intestate and the court appointed his son-in-law John H. Livengood administrator. Final disposition of his estate was made on 30 Dec 1905, with the homestead in Weatherford (lots 1-5, block 37) and personal goods set aside for Rebecca's use. The remainder of his estate was sold and assets distributed to his heirs in early 1906: widow, Rebecca J. Mann aged 55 years of Weatherford OK; and seven children, to wit, John C. Mann of Dallas Texas; Thomas J. Mann of Dallas Texas; G. R. (Ruf) Mann of Gypsum Texas; J. Monroe Mann of Seattle Washington; Ben F. Mann of Quanah Texas; Mrs (W. L.) Lela Hagan of Marietta Ind Ter; Mrs Comma Kelley Livengood of Weatherford.
