Choreographer, Ballet Dancer. Born Leonid Fyodorovich Myasin in Moscow, he was an innovative choreographer of more than 50 ballets and one of the most important figures in 20th-century dance. From 1915 to 1921, Massine was the principal choreographer of Diaghilev's "Les Ballets Russes." Following the departure of Vaslav Nijinsky, Massine became the preeminent male star and took over Nijinsky's roles. In 1939, Massine moved to the United States and became a citizen in 1944. From 1942 to 1944, he was the choreographer of the Ballet Theatre from New York and the Ballet International. Also, he played in the films "The Red Shoes" (1948), "The Tales of Hoffmann" (1951), "Carroussel Fantastique" (1954) and "Luna de Miel" (1959). He published his autobiography entitled "My Life in Ballet". His many works include "Parade", "The Three Cornered Hat", "Symphonie Fantastique", and "Le Beau Danube". He died in Köln, Germany.
