Most of John's sibilings had Alzheimer's disease by the time of their death. John was lucky. He died of a red cell aplasia. He was sharp until the hypoxia took over. I believe that his sister Birtha may have died of a brain tumor?

When I was little I remember riding in the car with grandpa. He had candy pumpkins in his pocket-- the kind that they have in the stores in October. He gave me some. Grandpa was the kind of cute old guy who drove around with candy in his pocket. I can't see a candy pumpkin to this day without thinking about him.

When they were in their late 80s or early 90s, John and Regina got a cat and named him Sparky. He was a HUGE but very fit and muscular cat. Before that, John always fed the cats in his barn. When I was very little, actually during my entire life, when we would visit he would wait to feed the cats until I came up because he knew that I loved cats. We would always go and feed them together. This is one of my favorite memories of going to the farm. That's also the kind of guy he was. He would watch people, quitely, figure out somthing about them, and then hold onto that memory for use at a later time-- like when it was time to feed the cats.
