Services for Vivian Ruth Berggren of Nevada City will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Forest View Cemetery on Red Dog Road in Nevada City.

Ms. Berggren died Thursday, June 1, in Nevada City. She was 92.

She was born Jan. 4, 1914, in Elgin, Ill., to Rudolph J. and Ruth O. (Murphy) Berggren. She graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1931 and received her registered nurse training from Los Angeles County General Hospital in 1934. She served as an Army nurse from 1940-1946 at Letterman Hospital in San Francisco and later as a surgery supervisor of the 82nd General Hospital in England and France. She reached the rank of captain.

In 1946, Ms. Berggren became the school nurse for Nevada County Superintendent of Schools. After receiving her bachelor of arts and public health nurse degrees, she served as supervisor of Health, Child Welfare and Attendance for Nevada County schools for a total of 28 years.

She was a past president of the Nevada County Business and Professional Women's Club and Soroptimist Clubs. She was a member of Evangeline Chapter No. 9, Order of Eastern Star, where she was a past worthy matron. She was also deputy grand matron of Grand Chapter Order of Eastern Star for eight chapters in 1957.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Betty Berggren of Nevada City; nieces Sandra Thompson of Nevada City, Debra Allen of San Jose and Victoria Kazy of Nevada City; nephew Eric Berggren of Nevada City; and numerous cousins and their families.

She was preceded in death by her father, Rudy, in 1971; her mother, Ruth, in 1981; her sister, Shirley Shiffer, in 1993; and her brother, Robert Berggren, in 1997.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Foothills at 12399 Nevada City Highway, Grass Valley.
