The second photo in the photo collection is reversed (left-to-right). The medals/decorations should be on his LEFT breast.

"Captain von Trapp" was a submarine officer who rose to the rank of "Korvettenkapitän" during the course of the Word War I. In English translations, this is "Lieutenant Commander" (a junior command-eligible officer). His service in submarines placed him in this category. Crewmembers who knew him might call him "Captain", because they were subordinate to his position as Commanding Officer and still treat him with due respect to his position. However, with regard to all other officers (particularly after his relief from command in U-boats) he returned to being addressed by his rank.
