George Willis Bishop was the son of John Alfred Bishop and Mary Elizabeth "Molly" (Williams) Bishop. He was the brother of: John Gordon, William Garland "Buddy", Maxine, Mary, Carl Wayne, Norman Rowland and Shirley Bishop.
George grew up in Dinwiddie County, where the Bishop family had farmed for 3 generations. He lost his mother at age 12, and his father at 19.
George's brother Buddy enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and George enlisted in the Army during WWII. George was wounded in Germany (at Remagen), and carried schrapnel from his wound for the rest of his life. He considered himself to be lucky though, because the soldier just a few steps ahead of him died from the explosion that wounded George.
He was a devoted husband to Betty Jean (Wall) Bishop for over 50 years, a loving father to Martha, George Casey, Walter Carson, and Kyle, and a doting grandfather to 6 adoring granddaughters. He was preceeded in death by his only grandson, Brandon Casey Bishop. Brandon was lost at age 17 (1998), in a 4-wheeler accident.
George was a long-time employee of Allied Chemical, retiring several years before his death. Even though he never made his living as a farmer (as at least 6 generations of Bishops had done before him), it was definitely in his blood. His favorite hobby was his magnificent vegetable garden.
Our hearts were broken when he lost his battle with cancer on March 11, 2002. He was very much loved, and is so greatly missed by his family and friends.
