________________________________
Elijah MOORE, after being raised on his father's 600 acre tobacco farm in Stokes County, North Carolina, enrolled in Franklin College (now the University of Georgia) between 1825 and 1827. Elijah graduated with an AB Degree in either 1832 or 1833. Elijah's first wife was Barbara Jane CHEATHAM BARBER, a widow with one son, George Thomas BARBER.

After Elijah and Barbara Jane CHEATHAM lost their infant daughter, Sara Ann Caroline MOORE, in 1838 they moved the family to Franklin, Heard County, Georgia, the County Seat. During part of his time in Franklin, Georgia, Elijah operated a hotel. Sarah Ann Caroline and John Augustus, their infant children are buried in Jack Vaughn Cemetery, two miles from Centralhatchee.

Near 1850 we find Elijah as postmaster in Hickory Flat, Alabama. When the 1850 census was taken, Elijah, Barbara Jane, James Christopher and William Arthur MOORE were living in Randolph County, Alabama. They probably were living in Lamar, Alabama, where Elijah was postmaster during the Civil War.

Elijah MOORE was also a merchant and taught school for many years in Alabama and Georgia. It was in Randolph County, Alabama, near Woodland, that the son of Elijah, James Christopher MOORE, met Martha Jane RAMPY.
