Alley, June Guthrie Gentry of Knoxville died April 1, 2009, at her home. She was born June 4, 1934 in Knoxville, TN, to Roy I. Gentry, a long time Knoxville City Services Director, and Geneva Guthrie Gentry. After receiving a Bachelor's degree at the University of Florida in 1956 and a Master's of Education at the University of Tennessee in 1957, she taught Modern Dance at Salem College and at Mary Washington College. While traveling in Japan during one of her summer breaks, she met Lesley R. Alley of Alameda, California and they married in April 1960. Over the next fifteen years, the couple traveled widely and lived in Yokohama, New York, Bangkok, Kuala Lampur, Tokyo, and Houston. In 1972, she and her family returned to Knoxville and began restoring one of Knoxville's most historic homes, Statesview, located on South Peters Road. In Knoxville, June was active in the Knoxville Museum of Art, introducing local school children to art in her role as Docent. She also served for many years on the board of Ramsey House Plantation, and was actively involved in Adult Literacy in Knoxville and Oak Ridge. She was on the Merit Board of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, and participated in many fundraising activities from the symphony's earliest days. Along with her husband, Lesley R. Alley of Houston, Texas, June Alley is survived by her children, Lesley G. Alley of Knoxville, Tennessee; Marc R. Alley of Seattle, Washington; and Amanda R. Singer and her husband Andrew Singer of Seattle, Washington; two grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.Gentry-Griffey Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
