We commemorate the passing of our wonderful Barbara Freeman Adkins, who died on Thursday, July 13, 2006. Barbara passed away at home after a three year challenge with lung cancer. She died at home surrounded by her loving family. She displayed the grace that characterized her life and her attitudes about life in general.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Alan; her children, Elizabeth (Liz) and Jonathan (Jon); her mother, Patricia Carlson of Sarasota, Florida; and her sister, Ann Gullion of Sugarland, Texas.

Barbara graduated from Riverview High School in Sarasota, Florida and then graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. She then obtained her Masters Degree in Social Work from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. Barbara practiced as a psychotherapist in Houston for twenty years and subsequently dedicated herself to her family and to volunteerism. Barbara had a particular interest in helping develop resources for children with learning differences and had great success as an advocate.

Barbara was loved and admired by all who knew her. Her wit and sense of humor were charming and will be greatly missed. Her absolute dedication to her children will continue to inspire all of us.
