Allene Mitchell left NC at the age of four with her parents and her one-year-old brother, Charlie. They took the train to Memphis, TN, and then took a boat to Little Rock, AR. They went west to homestead on government land.
Allene's father, Barney, had been a Methodist minister and school teacher for a few years after the end of the Civil War. While in the Confederate Army, he had been wounded and spent some time in the hospital where he became interested in medicine. After arriving in AR, he began to study medicine and took a state exam to get his license to practice medicine.
Allene became a school teacher and a music teacher. When she was 80, she was still playing the piano. The first few years she taught school she rode bareback across the prairies to the one room school house.
She married W. K. Dollarhide, the sheriff of Sevier Co., AR. October 1, 1889. They had six children: William King, Louis Walker, Charles Burrow, Nola Bendette, Zelma Lee, and Mary Dell.
Allene is buried in the Denison Cemetery in Idabell, OK, and her husband is buried in the Chapel Hill Cemetery in Sevier Co., AR.
