Parents: Peter Gibbons Jr and Sarah Greene.

Baptized: by Rev. Jedediah Smith in 1764.

BIrth order: 8th of twelve

Siblings: Elizabeth; Peter III; Lemuel; Bildad; twins Mary and Sarah [both died young]; Timothy; Eli; Jedediah Howe; Mary; Hannah [died young].

Marriage:

On October 12, 1780, Sarah married Joseph DeWolf, s/o Peter DeWolf and Sarah Couch, at Granby, Connecticut. They had 13 children; the first ten were born in Granby; the last three in Vernon, Ohio:

Ten Children born at Granby, Hartford Co., Connecticut:

Henry Champion b 3 Aug 1781; Ruhamah b 8 Jun 1783; Tensard Robinson b 5 Jun 1785; Joseph Jr b 6 Apr 1787; Sarah b 10 Mar 1789; Catherine b 6 Nov 1790; Horatio b 31 May 1793; Elizabeth b 24 Feb 1795; Louisa b 28 Mar 1797; Eli Gibbons b 19 Mar 1799.

Three Children born at Vernon, Trumbull Co., Ohio:

Adeline b 18 Mar 1802; Lemuel/Samuel b 22 Jan 1804; and Amanda b 22 Apr 1806.

Notes:

• They were pioneer settlers in Trumbull Co., Ohio where, according to History of Trumbull & Mahoning Counties, Vol. 2, pg 383, they moved in the spring of 1800, settling one mile south of the town.

• The portrait shown here was painted by James King, son of Jerusha Crosby and Jimmie King who lived in Vernon (see attached). Though the garments shown may not have been hers (partially-painted canvases were common to itinerant painters of the time), it could be assumed that it is a good likeness of Sarah. Over the years, the portrait survived and was handed down through family members and (as of this writing in 2013) was in the possession of one of Sarah's direct descendants. It is posted here after requesting and receiving permission in July, 2013. Please do not copy the image without including this important accompanying information. See photo for more details and documentation.

Gravesite Details

Stone, formerly broken, was repaired with a metal frame and the patina has discolored the stone. The stone may have been taller with an epitaph which has now been lost to time. It looks like the engraver of Joseph's stone, also engraved Sarah's.
