William Jennings Bryan:At times I thought awhile reading about you that you would become president especially against William H. Taft, William McKinley and Woodrow Wilson. You were a powerful speaker and an interesting Secretary of State also, Remembering you today, happy 154th birthday!

Very few really appreciate you even today. You were neither a buffoon nor an anti-intellectual. Unlike many who damn Charles Darwin today, you actually took the time to READ his work before criticizing it- and you conceded that the "seven days of creation" could have referred to seven eras of time rather than 24 hour periods. Were you to give your "Cross of Gold" speech today, the Christian Right and Tea Party crowds would have mounted your head on a pike- but that only underscores my view that you were a man of deep conviction who would never stand for the Social Darwinism that they espouse. They would learn as Woodrow Wilson learned when you were Secretary of State: that your principles were not for sale. To anyone.
