Father of Selina Garland Weeks, Sara Jane (Jamie) Garland, Elisha Calvin Garland, James Harvey Garland, Lexia R. Armida Garland Long, Irenia Garland Thurman, Samuel Harrison Garland, Joseph Harmon Garland, Amanda Arlecia Garland Stanley, and George Leaman Garland
Note that the following is as told by Grandad Joe and is most likely an exaggeration:
Joe Garland was drafted, in North Carolina, into the Confederate Army (Georgia 65th Infantry) early in the Civil War. He deserted to the Union Army, was captured and returned to his Confederate unit, only to desert the second time. This time he was welcomed to the Union Army unit (6th US Vol Infantry), which he joined by swimming a river. He then served the Union Army for the duration.
After the Civil War, he fought in the Indian wars at Fort Kearney, Nebraska. It was here that he broke his back moving across the Snake River during winter and was discharged. He eventually drew a small VA pension for this injury.
