Henry was the fourth son of German immigrant and Revolutionary War veteran Johann Heinrich Steinseifer (Henry Stonecypher) and Maria Elizabetha (Mary Elizabeth) Hoffheinz. His siblings were John (1782-1868), Jacob (1788-1825), George Washington (1789-1878), Adam (1794-1872), Elizabeth (1796-1865), Catherine (1801-1852), Joseph (1803-1827), and David (1807-1863). All lived in Harrison County except Elizabeth (Bottorff), Catherine (Boicourt), Joseph, and David.
Henry married Hannah Motsinger on April 30, 1815. Hannah was the daughter of Jacob Motsinger and Hannah Brown (or Braun). Together they had eleven children:
