Son of John Benjamin Burruss and Clara Edenton. Postwar, married to Gabriella Shackelford (1837 - 1908), he was again living in Partlow, Spotsylvania County; father of 6 (Clara, John, Emma, Percillia listed on 1870 U.S. Census).

On 4/11/1902, age 64, he applied for partial disability due to "exposure" [during the war] and suffering from "Rheumatism, Heart trouble & Kidney disease". He was approved for $15 per annum.

The 55th Infantry Regiment was organized in September, 1861, by the addition of four companies to W.N. Ward's "Essex and Middlesex" Battalion of Virginia Volunteers. In February, 1865, the 47th and 55th Regiments were consolidated.
