James Edwin Ford was the second of the three sons born to William Wallace and Elizabeth (McClure) Ford of rural Wabash County, Indiana; both descended from pioneer Wabash County families. He received his education in the local schools.

He was a farmer all his active life and maintained a forest and game preserve on his farm 5½ miles west of the city of Wabash. He took a keen interest in good government and was active in politics in his earlier years. He served one term on the Wabash County Council. He was one of the founders of the Wabash County Historical Society and was a former member of the Indiana State Historical Society. He was a charter member of the Richvalley Cooperative Elevator Company.

James Edwin was married on November 4, 1903 in a lovely home wedding to Miss Paulina Keller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Keller of Wabash (also descended from a pioneer Wabash County family). They had four daughters: Mary Louise (1904), Edith Elizabeth (1909), Pauline Keller (1914) and Henrietta (1917) Ford; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

James Edwin was the grandson of William Johnson and Mary (McGee) Ford of Wabash (he the brother of Dr. James Ford).
