U.S. Congressman. Born the nephew of the 5th U.S. President James Monroe, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy West Point in 1815, was assigned to the 4th Artillery Corps and served in the Artillery Corps during the War with Algiers. Commissioned a Lieutenant, he served as aide to General Winfield Scott (1817-22) and was appointed General Scott’s aide on the Black Hawk expedition in 1832. Resigning his commission in the U.S. Army, he was Alderman of New York City (1833-35). In 1839, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-sixth Congress, serving until 1841. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a member of the New York Senate (1850-52) and then retired from public life.
