Joshua was the son of Samuel and Maria (Yeates) Darnall. His father's biography in the 1879 Atlas of Putnam County details the military accomplishments of he and his brothers. "In 1863, when Morgan, the raider, invaded Indiana, a third son, Joshua, a fine boy of sixteen years, went to the front and laid down his young life for his country, as a recuit in the One Hundred and Fifteenth Regiment, in which he took part in the hard campaign to Cumberland Gap. While retreating from that country he contracted a cold while passing through the mountains of Kentucky, which after a recent attack of measles, proved fatal."
