American Revolutionary War British Major General. Born in England, he graduated from the academy at Woolwich and eventually was commissioned an officer in the Royal Artillery. By the outbreak of the American War of Independence, he was a Colonel in the British Army with a reputation as an excellent officer. Promoted to Major General in 1776, he was commander of all artillery in the Quebec Province. He supervised the building of the small fleet of ships that fought the Americans at the Battle of Valcour Island and took part in the capture of Fort Ticonderoga. In 1777, he was captured at Saratoga, New York and was a prisoner until he was exchanged and able to fight once again with Brigadier General Benedict Arnold who was now in the British Army. While on his way to link up, he contracted malaria and died at age 50 in Petersburg, Virginia.
