One career military professional to another, even though we would have fought on opposite sides. May you rest in peace, sir.

Rest in peace. 231 years is a long time to be gone- but not forgotten. This gentleman was acquainted with Sir Henry Clinton and Viscount Edward Ligonier, with whom he served under Prince Ferdinand of Brunswick, at the Battle of Minden in 1759. There is a comical reference made of Phillips attempts to seduce a girl of the post house, in a letter from Ligonier to Clinton. Apparently he was trying to persuade her in English and the girl only spoke German! Hilarious account given by Ligonier. So vivid- so candid and human. I read a copy of this letter about ten years ago and just figured out who "Phillips" was tonight. Ligonier died in 1782 at 42 and is buried at St. Andrews Curuch in Cobham Surrey with no marker. Clinton outlived them all, dying in 1795. He is buried in St. George's Chapel at Windsor.
