This was the last and oldest North Carolina Confederate Veteran. He was almost 101 years old when he died. He is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Yancey County. I don't know anything about this man, and many people that i have talked to that live in this area don't either.

Sam Bennett is my G Grandfather. He was a blacksmith by trade. He was very active with work his entire life. He was the last living Confederate vet in NC. Sam ran away to war to be with his family (Grandfather Col. Pittman Williams age 52 at enlistment his sons Samuel and William and James Bennett). He was 13 upon enlistment, He was sent to Richmond, VA with the Black Mountain Guards (Co K, 25th NC Inf.) with Gen John B. Gordon. He was wounded and spent the rest of the war tending the dead and wounded. Sam could not read or write. He and his family lived in Yancy county from about the 1700's to when his children died (Columbus). Some of the family is still in Yancy Co. He has one grandson, that knew him well, still living (in WA state) that may be him in the background.
