Garlene Mae (Toomer) Cates was
born Jan. 12, 1915 in Early to Frank and
Elsie (Bisgrove) Toomer. She was baptized
June 13, 1915. Garlene received her
education in the Early schools, graduating
in 1934.
On Feb. 27, 1935 she was married to
Byrhl E. Cates in Early. The couple
farmed five miles east of Lake View from
1935 to 1969. Garlene was then employed
in food services for Lake View-Auburn
Community School from 1971 to 1982.
She was a member of Auburn Presbyterian
Church until she moved to Sioux
City in 1993 and became a member of
Grace Methodist. She moved to Shady
Oaks in Lake City in May of 1997, where
she lived until her death.
Garlene's hobbies included flowers,
gardening, the outdoors, crocheting, playing
the piano and singing.
She is survived by her two sons, Ronald Cates and wife Elizabeth of Carroll and Dale Cates and wife Marilyn of Storm Lake; two daughters, Janice, Mrs. James Truelson, and Marilyn, Mrs. Craig Evans, all of Sioux City; seven grandsons; four great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters, Irene Riley of Sac City, Maxine, Mrs. George Gunville of Sutherlin, Ore., and Marlyn Hase of Schaller.
Garlene was preceded in death by her
husband, Byrhl Cates; her parents; her
brother, Melvin Toomer; her infant sisters;
daughter-in-law Marilyn; and granddaughter
Amy.
