Career U.S. Army Officer. Killed in action in the Republic of Vietnam on his second combat tour during the Vietnam War.

From Quaker Hill, Waterford, Connecticut, Pete was the Class President of the 1959 Class of New London High School where he lettered in football and baseball. He earned an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. At West Point, in his first class (senior) year, he was selected to command Cadet Company E-1. He graduated in 1963, selected Infantry branch and attended Branch school, Ranger and Airborne courses at Fort Benning, GA. He then joined the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC. When the Army expanded Special Forces, Pete was selected to help make that change. He served in Panama with the 8th Special Forces Group. In 1967, he served with the 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam. He commanded two Infantry companies and earned several valor awards. Following completion of the Infantry Career Course, he studied at the Naval Postgraduate School in California. On his second combat tour in Vietnam, he served as the G-3 (Operations Officer) with the Third Regional Assistance Command (TRAC). While on an inspection visit with the Commanding General, MG Tallman, at An Loc in Binh Long Province, Major Bentson was killed along with 3 other officers during a rocket attack on the base.
Some of his military decorations: Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Soldier's Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star with two "V" for valor devices, Army Commendation Medal with "V" for valor, Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters plus the Vietnam Gallantry Cross, the Vietnam Campaign medal, the Vietnam Merit medal, the Vietnam National Order, 5th class, Combat Infantryman Badge, Ranger Tab and Parachutist Badge.
Pete was survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.
