On this date 63 years ago -- July 18, 1951 -- Ralph Kiner belted three homers -- a grand slam off Phil Haugstad in the first, a two-run blast off Dan Bankhead in the fourth and a solo shot off Erv Palica in the eighth -- and drove in seven runs as Pittsburgh outslugged Brooklyn 13-12 at Ebbets Field.

Ralph Kiner was a childhood friend of mine; although he didn't know it. I spent many a Met's game listening to him on the radio late at night with Lindsey or Bob Murphy or turning on the TV with the sound turned down so I wouldn't wake my parents. Here is my favorite story about the great Ralph Kiner!!! R.I.P. Ralph; Baseball Hero and War Hero!!!"In those days we didn't have hitting coaches. I was struggling. One September afternoon in 1969 (Sept. 15), I asked him to come and feed balls through the pitching machine. We talked for about an hour. He gave me tips on holding the bat. That night I had the greatest night of my career. I hit two home runs off Steve Carlton and we won, 4-3." (The two two-run homers accounted for all the Mets runs on the night Carlton struck out 19.) I was so sad to hear of your passing Ralph. So many fond memories of you broadcasting with Lindsey and Bob. Kiner's Korner and watching your induction into the Hall of Fame. I was there that day with my mom and a friend and we had such a wonderful day. You will always hold a fond spot in my heart. RIP
