He was born to Mary Aldyth and Thomas J. Akers. He graduated from Oregon State University with a Masters in Biochemistry. He worked for Shell Oil Company and retired after 32 years. After retirement he and his wife Rosemary coauthored several Paleontology books which are listed in the Library of Congress and found on the shelves in Europe and other countries. He enjoyed travel and after retiring has traveled round the globe to every continent. Recently, he had taken great enjoyment in bird watching and has amassed an impressive life list of birds. He is survived by his loving wife of over 5 decades, Rosemary Akers, his daughters Alice McWilliams and husband Ernie, Patricia Wisniowiecki and husband Mike, his son Thomas Jay Akers and wife Esther, his sister Lois Eifrig and husband George, and grandchildren Zachary and Amelia McWilliams, Nicholas and Anna Wisniowiecki, Thiago Pinheiros and a host of dear friends.
