Mystery Shrouds Young Hursong Lad's Death
Joplin Doctors Say Death Was Not Caused By Pneumonia

It became known today that the death of Lender Hursong [sic: Lenander Hussong], who died suddenly Thursday morning, was not caused by pneumonia as has been stated. No symptoms of pneumonia was evident at the boy's death, and he was sick only a few hours.

Monday morning the boy went to Joplin to visit his sister's little boy and while playing together they cracked some walnuts and ate them. Later in the evening the Hursong boy returned home.

Wednesday evening his playmate was taken suddenly ill and died in violent convulsions. The boy was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Crosby.

Twelve hours later occurred the death of Leander Hursong. He was only sick a few hours and died of convulsions. His death was identically the same as that of his little playmate. Joplin doctors state the deaths were due to eating walnuts which probably contained poison. Leander Hursong was the 12 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. George Hursong of Fifteenth and Wood streets.
