Charles W. Appel Dies; Montgomery Educator

Charles WillIam Appel, 73, a retired assistant principal who worked at elementary schools in Montgomery County for 32 years died Nov 13 at his home in Derwood after a heart attack.

Mr Appel retired in 1982 from Poolesville Elementary and had worked as a substitute teacher since then.

Earlier in his career he taught fifth and sixth grades at Lone Oak, Weller Road and Georgetown Hill elementary schools and was an assistant principal at Mill Creek Town and Rockinghorse Road elementaries.

Mr. Appel was a native of Cumberland, Md. He was a graduate of Frostburg State University and received a masters degree in education from the University of Maryland. He served in the Army in India during World War II.

A resident of the Washington area for about 50 years he was a member of the Montgomery County and Maryland Retired Teachers associations and Rockville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife Mary Lee Appel of Derwood; a son Robert
L Appel of Germantown; and three grandchildren. Another son Charles William Appel Jr., died in 1973.
