General Ireton was Oliver Cromwells son-in-law. He died in camp while with the forces in Ireland, and was brought to Westminster Abbey and buried in this vault. On January 30, 1661, the anniversary of the execution of Charles I, his body was exhumed and his corpse was hanged from the gallows for a day and at evening the body was buried beneath the gibbet. His body probably still lies somewhere under what is now Connaught Square.
