from the Madison Democrat April 25, 1906"...In June, 1900, a woman and her husband came to Kilvourn to give an entertainment. the woman claimed to be the original Belle Boyd, the famious rebel spy. The woman was taken sick on their arrival, and died at the Hile House June 11, 1900. During her illness the Woman's Relief Corps afforded assistance in attendance, sympathetic association and in the funeral obsequies... She was buried in the village cemetery, appropriate services being held at the Episcopal church. The pall bearers were members of the Grand Army of the Republic and Sons of Veterans, members of both organizations attending...Nothing was done to distinguish the grave until last summer. Then Mrs. G. C. Pierce and Mrs. Ed Bullis, of the Relief Corps, at their own expense, caused the ground to be raised, and Guy Glazier donated the memorial headstone that now marks the grave. In order to settle the question of identity, Major Guy C Pierce instituted a correspondence with parties in the south..." [which confirmed her identity, by Jonathan H Alexander, who served under Col.John Mosby.]

A true heroine of the Civil War- the Confederate cause would have been at a greater loss without your passionate service. Rest in Peace, Belle.
