John Webb SEWANEE -- John Maurice Webb died April 29, 1999, at an area health care facility. He was 83. Mr. Webb was born in Nashville and grew up in Durham, N.C. He graduated from Duke University and finished his education at Yale University, where he received his master's degree in education. He served in the U.S. Army under Gen. George Patton in World War II, was captured by Germans and sent to Poland, where he was liberated in June of 1944. He was discharged with the rank of captain. After serving in the Army, he joined the faculty of the University of the South in 1946 as an assistant professor of history, eventually rising to the rank of full professor. During that time he was awarded a Ph.D. from Duke University. He served as dean of men for 19 years and also served as associate dean of the college and finally dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He was past president of the EQBY Sewanee Civic Association and served on the Franklin County Quarterly Court (now County Commission) and on the board of the Franklin County Hospital and Franklin County Chamber of Commerce. In 1992 he was winner of the university's Distinguished Faculty Award. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Albert. Survivors include his wife, Ellen Famum Webb, Sewanee; a son, Shipp Webb, Sewanee; and step-daughter, Mira Gerard, Athens, Ga. Services were held Monday at All Saints Chapel with the Rev. Tom Ward, the Rev. Anwyn Myers and the Rev. Thomas McFie officiating. Burial was in University Cemetery, Sewanee. Memorial contributions may be made to DuPont Library or the University of the South. Moore-Cortner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
