Inventor. Born in Washington, Kentucky, the son of Joseph and Catherine Dalton Hudnut. He attended school until age 11 when he apprenticed himself to a carpenter. At age 20, Hudnut moved to Indiana where he opened a mill.
He served with the 19th Indiana during the Civil War before returning home in 1864. The family then removed to Terra Haute where Hudnut established two more mills and produced Favorite Brand grits, corn, hominy, flour, and pearl meal. Hudnut and his son Benjamin patented the process and machinery for extracting oil from grain. Their product, Mazoil cooking oil, was first marketed in 1899.
