"CPO (USN Ret) Marshall Randolph AUTRY, July 16, 1934- September 29, 2013 // Columbus, Georgia--CPO (USN Ret) Marshall Randolph AUTRY, age 79, resident of Columbus, died on Sunday, September 29, 2013 at his residence. Graveside services are scheduled at Linwood Cemetery, Columbus on Wednesday, October 2, 2013, 3 pm., according to Striffler-Hamby, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus. The family will receive friends at the cemetery after the service. Mr. AUTRY, son of the late James Monroe AUTRY and Kathryn Enid STEWART AUTRY, was born July 16, 1934, in Columbus, Georgia. He graduated from Bibb City Grammar School and Jordan High School. Mr. AUTRY met and married Dolores HILL on April 30,1955 in Ellaville, Georgia at the home of [Primitive Baptist] Elder Cayce PHILLIPS. Mr. AUTRY was retired with disability from the U.S. Navy where he served his country honorably for over 18 years. During his distinguished military career, he served as an Aviation Electricians Mate Chief; a Drillmaster for the Navy Drill Team in Jacksonville, Florida; and was honor guard to Miss America at the Gator Bowl. He served in both the Korea Era Conflict and Vietnam Era Conflict. CPO AUTRY was a flight crew member with Air Crew and Combat Air Crewman wings; an anti-submarine warfare specialist, first in the Airship (blimp) Squadron Two in Brunswick, Georgia and later with Patrol Squadron 44, flying P5Ms, P2V-5s, and P3As. Flying out of Trinidad, his crew was first to spot the Russian ship carrying missiles to Cuba during the Cuba Missile Crisis. His crew received a Letter of Congratulations from President John KENNEDY. His squadron was also active during the Bay of Pigs Invasion and NASA's Mercury projects including John Glenn's historic flight when he was first American to orbit the earth. CPO AUTRY is a member and was Vice-President Chief of the Cherokee Indians of Georgia; a Sergeant in the Cherokee Marshals Office; and a member of the Grand Council. He is a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, and the Sons of the Confederate and was awarded the Earl Ivey Award for his service. CPO Autry was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, Veteran of Foreign Wars, and American Legion. He was a member and was baptized in the Progressive Primitive Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School, served as choir and conducted services on Sunday and Wednesday nights after his ordination on August 22, 1968. Afterwards he was a member of Saint John's United Methodist Church and Striplin Terrace United Methodist church. CPO Autry was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Dolores Hill Autry. He is survived by one daughter, Tracy Lynn AUTRY; two sons, Michael Ray AUTRY and Christopher Glynn AUTRY and his wife Janet of Columbus, Georgia; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; other relatives and friends.
