Ervin A. Bemis Succumbs, Member of Pioneer Family
Funeral services for Ervin Albert Bemis, 66. member of the pioneer Bemis - Hancock - Roberds families that helped settle San Bernsraino, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Lord's Funeral Home. He died Saturday at a San Bernardino hospital.
Mr. Bemis a native and life resident of Rialto and San Bernardino was a great-great-grandson of Jerusha Guernsey Bemis, on of the women who was a member of the Mormon settlers of the city. She entered San Bernardino Valley in June of 1854.
Mr. Bemis was a graduate of San Bernardino High School and was a member of the all San Bernardino Company K of the U.S. Army during World War II.
He owned and operated the Al Bemis Lumber Yard at 1798 W. 5th St., in San Bernardino from 1946 until he suffered a heart attack in 1961.
Before that, Mr. Bemis had worked for Suverkrup Lumber and for contractor George Herz.
He had grown up in citrus ranching in the Rialto area and had spent most of his life in that work. when the last of the groves was removed from the area, he turned to his other endeavors.
He was a member of Elks Lodge 836, Native Sons of the Golden West Arrowhead Parlor 110, the American Legion Post 14 and the Mexican Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Evelyn L. Hill of San Bernardino; two sisters, Mrs. Grace Perkins of Altadena and Miss Mabel Bemis of Pasadena; a brother, George W. of Puerto Rico; and three grandchildren, Edward, Claudia and Alison Hill, all of San Bernardino.
Burial will be in Rialto Park Cemetery.
