Born in Aiken County, SC she was the daughter of the late Tony and Josephine Garvin Keenan. She was first married to the late Lee Barnes for 30 years and was the widow of Willie J. Bonnette having been married for 6 years. LaVerne was a 1952 graduate of Windsor High School where she played Girls Basketball all four years of high school. She was member of Edisto Baptist Church and a former member of the Hen House Ministry, Swansea, SC. LaVerne enjoyed the outdoors, working in her yard, watching birds, traveling and clogging. She formerly worked at A & P Grocery Store, Aiken, River's Pharmacy for 13 years, also at Miller's Bread Basket for 13 years, and for the last four years she lived at Cumberland Village, Aiken, where she made new friends and enjoyed watching ducks from her balcony.
Survivors include daughters, Wanda B. and her husband Jack K Gray, Jr. and Brenda B. Wilkins all of Aiken, SC; grandchildren Cody and Paula Wilkins; step-grands: Kelley (Wendy) Gray; step great-grands: Steven Gray, Megan (Matthew) Enlow; step-great, great grandson Joel Enlow and several nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by son-in-law Jerry Wilkins; brothers Wallis E. Keenan, Robert "Bobby" Keenan and L. T. Keenan.
