NEWPORT NEWS - Herman Barnes, 87, died Tuesday, June 28, 2005. Herman was a native of North Carolina and had been a Peninsula resident since 1958. He retired from Payne Air Corp. in Newport News after 35 years of service. He was a charter member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church and was a member of the church choir. He was a member of the Swinging Singers and the PAA. He loved music, and played the fiddle and harmonica, and was always ready to play a tune. He was a loving father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Elease P. Barnes; and his brother, Woodrow Barnes. He is survived by two daughters, Faye Comanor and her husband, Dr. Jeffrey Michael, of Kennesaw, Ga., and Amy Mills of Antioch, Tenn.; one grandson, Daniel Eric Mills; and his faithful friend and companion, Edith Kennedy of Newport News. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 1, in St. Luke's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 30, in Amory Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to St. Luke's Church Choir Fund, 300 Ella Taylor Road, Yorktown, VA 23692.
