Aquillan/Aquilla Nelson Ballenger was the son of Oratia "Horatio" Nelson Ballenger 1817-1852) who was born in Ohio and died in Illinois; and Hannah (Womeldort) Ballenger (1818-1900) (who later married a White) who was born in Pennsylvania and died in Illinois.
Aquilla's parents were married in 1844 in Illinois, but by 1850 they were residing in Clarno, Green County, Wisconsin. Aquilla had the following known siblings:

Millard Filmore Ballenger 1851-1927
By 1852, the family was back in Stephenson County, Illinois where Aquilla's father died at just age 35. On November 2, 1859, Aquilla's mother remarried to Seba White in Stephenson County, Illinois.
During the Civil War, Aquilla served in Company F, 142 Regiment, Illinois Infantry Volunteers, as is inscribed on his tombstone. After this, Aquilla and his brother Millard somehow ended up in Schuyler County, Missouri.
Aquilla and Millard married sisters in 1869. Millard married Hannah Jane Dykes on November 6, 1869, and Aquilla married Lucinda Dykes on November 18, 1869, both in Schuyler County, Missouri, where both continued to live.
Aquilla and Lucinda had the following known children:
