From the SOUTH BEND (IN) TRIBUNE, Thursday, April 22, 1999:

Avanelle G. Cowen, 94, of South Ironwood Drive, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 9:50 a.m. on Tuesday in St. Paul's Retirement Community. Ananelle was born on June 7, 1904, in Leiters Ford, Ind. and had been a lifelong area resident. She retired from the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation in 1965 after 34 years of service as a school teacher.

Ananelle was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Mishawaka, a member of the Eastern Star, Indiana Teachers Association, and a charter member of the Grandmother's Club of Kissimmee, Fla.

On June 2, 1928, in Leiters Ford, Ind., Ananelle G. Kurtz married Clifford R. Cowen. He passed away on March 27, 1995. Ananelle was also preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Sue McCoy in 1997.

She is survived by a son, Richard L. Cowen of Vandalia, Mich.; seven grandchildren; and by five great-grandchildren.
