LAKE PLACID - Maude H. Barney, 81, of Sentinel Road, Lake Placid, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012, at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, surrounded by her family and friends.

Maude was born March 27, 1931, in Lake Placid, the daughter of Merrill Smith Sr. and Ruth (Pratt) Smith. She married William "Al" Barney in Lake Placid on Oct. 11, 1947. They made their home on Balsam Street in Lake Placid for more than 50 years.

Maude was a nurse at Adirondack Medical Center for many years. She started her career as a nurse's aide at Placid Memorial Hospital in the 1960s and as her children grew she enrolled at North Country Community College and earned her degree in nursing. When Maude received her nursing degree, it was one of her proudest moments. She enjoyed a long career at AMC, fully retiring at the age of 80. She talked often of her many friends and co-workers at AMC; it was her love.

She is survived by four sons: Lawrence Barney and his wife Madonna, Gary Barney and his wife Margaret, Curtis Barney and Todd Barney, all of Lake Placid; two daughters: Susan Roberts and her husband Steve of Florida and Kim Barney of Lake Placid; 12 grandchildren: Matt Barney, Bridget Cole, Brittany Barney, Laurie Spotts, Elizabeth Bale, Robin Shipman, Melanie O'Brien, Juliet Barney, Billy Barney, Mike Barney, Tim Barney and Baylee Bickford; 22 great-grandchildren; and her good friends Bea Colby, Barbara Vassar and Bonnie Watson, with whom she had many adventures.

Maude was predeceased by her parents, Merrill Smith Sr. and Ruth (Pratt) Smith; her husband, Al Barney; two brothers: Merrill Smith Jr. and Charles Smith; and two grandchildren: Derek Barney and Bethany Talley.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at the M.B. Clark Inc. Funeral Home in Lake Placid. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at St. Eustace Episcopal Church in Lake Placid with the Rev. David Ousley officiating. Cremation will follow. Burial will be in North Elba Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Donations in memory of Maude Barney may be made to the Adirondack Medical Center.
