Son of Moses of Frankfort, ME and Margaret Ann Bowden Grant of Lowell, Maine.
James enlisted, with his brother Joseph, Dec 11, 1861 at age 18 in Lowell, Maine as a private into CO F 14th Maine Infantry Regiment. He re-enlisted Jan 1, 1864. He was wounded and taken prisoner Oct 19, 1864 at the battle of Cedar Creek VA. He died of disease as a POW at Salisbury prison. NC.
