Maria was the oldest of three children born to Enoch Wood and Olive Perley. Her father had been a Revolutionary War soldier. She was married in Hallowell, Maine on 31 August 1830 to Phineas Sweetser. Their family was living in Hallowell in 1837 when her father died, and the funeral was held in their home. Maria and Phineas were both called of Hallowell in 1849 when each made an affidavit for her mother's pension based on her father's Revolutionary War service. They had four known children, two of whom died as infants and are buried beside them. The children were:

*Edward Fairfield, b. 19 Oct 1831, married and divorced; died in Corinth, ME 11 May 1906

*Mariah Perley, b. 6 Nov 1833

*Henry Whitman, b. 24 Oct 1836, d. 2 April 1837

*Infant, b. and d. 1837
