John was a gunsmith. He was married to Emma Jones, and they had four children, William, Alvin, Solomon, and Linian. They came to California with their oldest son William and his family, and soon after, William died, leaving John and Emma to raise his oldest son.

In 1899, when Emma died, John knew that she had wanted to be buried as near to their son William as she could, so in order to honor her wishes the best he could, he bought a small piece of land about 18 feet square on a private ranch not too far from the old cemetery there. By the year 1900, John, age 81, was living with 6 of his grandchildren:
John S Kelsay, Addie M Cannon, Frank E Cannon, Wayne B Cannon, Ellis S Cannon and Nelson K Real.
John was buried next to Emma when he died in 1908. The roads were built at a later time so that now their graves are at the intersection of the two roads (Renfro Crossing and Merritt Road), in Kelseyville, California. John's stone is no longer there.
The piece of property that houses these Kelsay remains was known as part of the Steele Ranch according to John's Burial Permit.
